Spanish American War Veterans from NebraskaSpanish American War Veterans from Nebraska. K. H. Simmons. Softcover, 2000, New, Index, 409 pp.
The United States declared war on Spain on April 25, 1898. The State of Nebraska sent three full regiments and a troop of volunteer cavalry: The First regiment of Nebraska infantry was mustered in at Lincoln under the command of Lt. Cot. John M. Stotsenburg; The Second infantry regiment of the Nebraska National Guard was mustered in Lincoln under the command of Col. C. J. Bills; and the Third regiment was mustered in at Omaha and enrolled 1,419 men. They were under the command of Col. William Jennings Bryant. Additionally, Troop A of the Nebraska National Guard enrolled for service at Lincoln and mustered into the United States volunteer cavalry as Troop K, Third United States Volunteer Cavalry (also known as Grigsbys Cowboys). This book is a compilation of material from two sources: First, a microfilm record of the service card file which is kept at the State Historical Society in Lincoln. A handwritten card was prepared for each man who served. Some contain as little information as name and age but the majority proved to be a rich resource for the genealogist searching for a relative who served in this war. The cards list name, age, place of birth, next of kin (and their place of residence), occupation, and marital status, as well as a brief documentation of each mans service. This includes information as to wounded or killed in action or other cause of death. Second, The Roster of Soldiers, Sailors and Marines Who Served in the War of the Rebellion, Spanish-American War and World War compiled and issued by Secretary of State Charles W. Pool and published in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1925. This information details where the veteran was residing when the county assessors compiled the roster in 1923. Additionally, it names for soldiers who were living in Nebraska but who served for other volunteer infantries or in the regular Army. ISBN 1-58549-608-1 |
