Tennessee: Territory to StatehoodTennessee: Territory to Statehood. Dave Foster. Softcover, (2000), repr. 2002, Appendix, References, Index, v + 89 pp.
From Watauga to Cumberland to Franklin, Tennessee went through many changes before joining the Union. This book describes the events of 1790 to 1796 and the challenges faced by the founders. Tennessee had an unusual birth. Before she joined the Union, the people of the area experimented with self-government more than once. From the Watauga Association to the Cumberland Compact to the State of Franklin, the self-sufficient citizens ruled themselves, without an okay from any outside system. This book presents part of the story. Only by living through the time would a person know the problems and freedoms connected with making a new life on a not-too-friendly frontier. Dave foster seeks to describe the times and events from 1790 to 1796, when Tennessee was part of the Southwest Territory. #TOP0428 |
