Recollections of a Rebel ReeferRecollections of a Rebel Reefer James Morris Morgan. Softcover, (1917), Repr. 2003, Illus., original index, 491 pp.
This is the autobiography of James Morris Morgan and his many adventures as a midshipman. Morgan was born in New Orleans, LA, in 1845 and his exciting exploits began shortly thereafter. I imagine that I have met with some adventures out of the usual run of the average schoolboys experiences, and if I have written some of them down, it has been with the laudable desire of amusing other people rather than personal vanity or desire for notoriety. The journey through Morgans life is also an eyewitness account of a volatile time in Americas history. In 1860, Morgan presented himself at Annapolis and was accepted as a midshipman. Detailed chronicles of his midshipmans life on Old Ironsides, his Confederate service on the cruiser Georgia during the Civil War, adventures during the reconstruction period, experience as an officer in the Egyptian service, visits to exotic foreign ports, and much more keep the pages turning. Morgans pleasant nature and humorous outlook are evident in his writing, making this fascinating narrative hard to put down. An abundance of names and events, illustrations and vintage photographs, and a fullname plus subject index enhance the text. #M2306 ISBN# 0-7884-2306-1 |
