Highland Papers, Volume IIIHighland Papers. Volume III. J. R. N. MacPhail, K.C.. (1920), reprint 1995, Index, 338 pp.
Upon the death of Donald Gregory, his manuscripts were placed in the Society of Antiquaries MS. Collection. A selection of his material, as well as documents from other sources, comprises this third volume in the series originally published by the Scottish History Society. The time period covered herein is 1662-1677 and includes an exciting account on witchcraft; there were charges of witchcraft in Rothsey in 1662 and the manuscript was transcribed verbatim which shows how far-reaching was the belief in the effects of witchcraft. It also includes: a memorial for John of Fassifern (son of John Cameron) telling the story of his persecution and arrest in 1753; Highland religious conditions; papers relating to Kintyre (a peninsula classed as one of the South Isles) describing its long history of struggles for control; and extracts from the collection of state papers in the advocates library known as the Denmylne MSS.; papers relating to public affairs during the reigns of James VI and Charles I; and documents related specifically to the Western Highlands and Islands.
