The First Virginia Regiment of Foot 1775-1783THE FIRST VIRGINIA REGIMENT OF FOOT, 1775 - 1783. M. Lee Minnis. Hardbound, 1998, 6x9, Index, append., 467 pp.
The First Virginia was unique among Virginia units as it was the first state unit formed and the last to be dismissed after wars end. This history is an attempt to provide a more comprehensive view of that fighting unit and life as its soldiers lived it. State names are included in all locations listed, when known, except for Virginia. Published material has been explored, compared, and combined but more importantly military service records, pension applications, and newspaper accounts have been included in detail. This review has been exhaustive but not in totality as the spectrum of information is so broad. The intent is to provide not just the history of the First Virginia but also that of its members where possible. Biographical sketches are intended to cover not only the war years but prior and subsequent to, as well. The Patriots of the First Virginia did more than just win a war, they gave us their progeny who have contributed just as importantly to our nations growth. This is the most comprehensive look at a single Continental Line Regiment during the American Revolution that I have ever encountered. Over 460 pp. of information on the history of the unit, robustly full of names of people present at specific events, a full run of muster rolls, and better, an individual biography of each soldier in the unit. |
