Alleghany County, North Carolina, Marriages, 1849-1900Alleghany County, North Carolina, Marriages, 1849-1900. George Henry Latham. Paperback, 1996, 8.5 x 11, Index, 354 pp.
This book stands to save a lot of work for anyone whose research could involve marriages taking place in Alleghany County, NC. This county was a place to get married quickly in years gone by, and remains so even today. The information in this book is extracted from the marriage certificates on file in the court house in Sparta, NC. These marriage records are arranged alphabetically by the grooms surname, typically showing for each marriage the day, month and year it took place; the grooms name, age, residence and the names of his parents; and the brides name, age, residence and the names of her parents. An index of brides is included. This book simplifies examination of marriage records which were handwritten and frequently phonetic in their spelling. An additional bonus which makes this work unique is that the book supplies in many cases the maiden names of the mothers of the marrying partiesnames not recorded in the original marriage records but obtained by the author from a number of different sources. The author served for 20 years in the U.S. Army before earning a few college degrees; he turned to genealogy following career work in computer programming. His book will be of interest to anyone looking for marriage information on people in the mountains of southwestern Virginia and northwestern North Carolina. L0480 |
