Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, Minutes of Court of Common Pleas & Quarter Sessions, Volume VIMecklenburg County, North Carolina, Minutes of the Court of Common Pleas & Quarter Sessions,1851 - 1860 . Volume VI. Herman W. Ferguson. Softcover, 1998, Index, 303 pp.
Mecklenburg County was formed in 1762 from Anson being the first county to be cut off from Anson to the west. Regrettably, the court minutes for the first twelve years have been lost. The extant minutes begin with the July 1774 Session of the Court and from that point onward to the end of the court the minutes are virtually complete with only a random page or two missing. Experienced genealogical researchers agree that court minutes are the most important of county-level records. the reason is that court minutes reflect many areas of activity in the county and the persons involved: estates being settled, persons assigned to jury duty or to work on the roads, lawsuits, wills probated, the appointment of administrators of estates whose owners died intestate, deeds recorded, apprentice indentures, orphans taken under the care of the court, taverns licensed, etc. The surnames that occur in this book most frequently are listed below. Volume I begins in April 1780 or about the time that General Cornwallis began his southern campaign in the attempt to bring the American Revolution to an end. Volumes II through V addresses the years 1801 to 1850, and Volume VI completes the six volumes covering the years 1851-1860. [#FER-NC0016] |
