Missouri Birth and Death Records, Volume One Missouri Birth and Death Records, Vol. I. Sherida K. Eddlemon. Softcover, (1995), repr. 2006, new, 433 pages.
According to the publisher, Another book from Sherida Eddlemon that is a necessity for the Missouri researcher. Registration of births and deaths began as early as 1863 in some areas of Missouri. From 1883 to 1893 county clerks were required by law to register births and deaths in Missouri. Although this registration was required, the law was not enforced and as a result some counties actually recorded very few births or deaths during this period. Since the state did not have complete compliance until 1911, other sources such as church, military, cemetery, tax, and probate records and newspapers from the time period are the researcher's main tools in establishing dates of birth and death. This volume is the first in a series devoted to these alternate sources of vital records. The birth and death records in this volume are presented in alphabetical order and come from sources in sixty-eight counties. There is a surname index to the few French 'dit' names and maiden names that appeared in the records.
