Marriages of Stewart County, Tennessee 1838-1866Edythe Rucker Whitley. Hardbound, green cloth with gilt lettering on front and spine, published 1982, as new, Indexed, 105 pages. According to the publisher: Stewart County was erected November 1, 1803 from a part of Montgomery County. At that time it comprised a domain which extended west to the Tennessee River and south to the Alabama line. After the Chickasaw Purchase of 1819 the jurisdiction of the county for a while extended to the Mississippi River. While the county seat was established by 1805, the earliest marriage records in the courthouse at Dover date from 1838. The records given here were copied at the courthouse from loose papers (1838-1866). For the most part they derive from bonds and licenses, and there are about 2,500 marriages, and they are indexed.
