Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New HampshireGenealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire. Sybil Noyes, Charles T. Libby, & Walter G. Davis. Five parts in One. Hardcover, green cloth with gilt lettering on spine and front, as new, 795 pp.
Originally published in five parts between 1928 and 1939. This indispensable reference work is now brought together in a single volume. It offers extensive biographical and genealogical data on every family established in Maine and New Hampshire before 1699, a project touching upon many thousands of individuals. The limit of 1692 set for Savage's Genealogical Dictionary of New England is here extended seven years to 1699 and as Vermont was then unsettled, this work amounts to a "Savage" for northern New England. The Dictionary contains hundreds of thousands of statements of fact as well as of judgment. In great detail it lists the births, marriages, and deaths of the settlers through the third generation and sometimes into the fourth. Further genealogical information includes place of origin and places of residence, details of wills and deeds, court cases, and highlights of life and career. The arrangement of the text is alphabetical by family name. Each head of family is given a paragraph and numbered. Under each surname the heads of families are arranged alphabetically, regardless of generations, and the figure following a name refers the reader to the paragraph treating of that person's parentage. |
