This book tells the history and describes the culture of the Northern Maidu. It is divided into twenty short chapters about the tribe, including the following: Physical Characteristics, Wildlife---Plants---Foods, Conservation Methods, Homes and Other Structures, Weapons and Foods, Baskets and Basketmaking, Religion, and Doctoring. Throughout these pages, Mrs. Potts looks back to the days of her childhood at Big Meadow. Chankutpan is her Maidu name; how fittingly it translates -- One With Sharp Eyes. About the Author: Marie Potts, the author of THE NORTHERN MAIDU and a leader among her people, was born in 1895 at Big Meadows, California, now the site of Lake Almanor in Plumas County. She worked her way through Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania and returned to California where she married, reared five children, and began an unceasing effort to improve the lives of all Native Americans. Mrs. Potts has been a vital force in the Native American Movement. She played a key role in establishing the American Indian Press Association and was co-founder of the Federated Indians of California Inter-Tribal Council. She also founded "Smoke Signal," the oldest Indian newspaper in America, which focused on the struggle for Indian rights. PA-09 |
