The Diary of Lieutenant Von Bardeleben and Other Von Donop Regiment Documents. Bruce E. Burgoyne. Softcover, (1998), repr. 2007, New, Index, 218 pp. Originating in the Hesse-Cassel province of Germany, the professional soldiers of the von Donop Regiment were sold into English service in 1776 to be used in putting down the revolution begun in England's North American colonies only a year before. This freshly translated volume contains the anonymously written wartime diaries of Lieutenant Johann Heinrich von Bardeleben, the company Church Book of the von Donop Regiment compiled by Chaplain Georg Christoph Coester, and the regimental journal of Quartermaster Johann Georg Zinn. Although the von Donop Regiment saw limited action in the War of Independence when compared with other Hessian units, these first-hand accounts of the everyday lives of 18th-century fighting men are nevertheless infused with drama. The physical and emotional demands of the soldiering life compounded by the anxiety of separation from one's family, loved ones and homeland are clearly rendered alongside eyewitness accounts of campaigns, troop movements and life in camp. Mr. Burgoyne is a recipient of the Benjamin Franklin Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Revolution Roundtable of Philadelphia.
